Q1. How do I choose a safe?
A1. Due to the vast array of safes available it’s important to decide at the outset what you would like to protect in order to streamline your search.
If you are looking to protect cash, valuables and important paperwork from the threat of theft you require a security safe. For detailed advice on choosing a security safe please follow the link to Security Safes – Buyers Guide.
If you are looking to protect important paperwork, such as passports, certificates contractual or legal documents, from the threat of fire you require a document fire safe. For detailed advice on choosing a document fire safe please follow the link to Fire Safes – Buyers Guide.
If you are looking to protect important paperwork and media, such as CD’s, DVD’s and data tapes, from the threat of fire you require a data fire safe. For detailed advice on choosing a data fire safe please follow the link to Fire Safes – Buyers Guide.
Q2. What does ‘cash rating’ mean?
A2. A cash rating refers to how much your insurance company will underwrite the contents of your safe for. For example if the cash rating is £1,000 then the safe is suitable for storing up to £1,000 in cash.
Q3. How do I know what the valuables cover is on a safe?
A3. As a general rule insurers typically give up to 10 times the cash rating for valuables cover. Therefore, a £1,000 cash rated safe can hold up to £10,000 in valuables.
Q4. What are fire ratings?
A4. A fire rating refers to the duration in minutes that contents within a safe will remain protected from excessive heat and fire. Ratings are split into 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 minute increments. As paper and data is damaged at different temperatures fire safes are divided into two main categories, those which protect paperwork, Document Safes, and those which protect media / data, Data Safes.

Q5. What are graded safes?
A5. Graded Safes are safes which have been independently tested to the official industry standards. They can fall into 9 grades ranging from a cash rating of £2,000 (S1) to £150,000 (Grade 6). They offer the highest security available for free-standing security safes.
Q6. Will my safe need to be bolted down?
A6. Many insurance providers will stipulate that a security safe must be bolted down to either the floor or wall if it weighs less than 1 tonne. All the security safes sold on this website will require installation, either on a DIY basis or by a professional installation crew.
Q7. What does installation entail?
A7. As part of our delivery and installation service our professional safe installation crew deliver the safe to your premises, position it to where you would like it located and then bolt it to either the floor or wall using one or more rawl bolts. They will also test everything and briefly take you through the main functions.
Q8. Are electronic locks reliable?
A8. Yes. Electronic locks are as reliable as key locks. All are battery powered so they do not need to be situated by an external power supply. Using an electronic lock means you will not have to worry about where to keep keys or what to do if you lose them. Many electronic locks also come with additional features such as time delay.
Q9. What happens if my electronic lock runs out of power?
A9. Electronic locks are battery powered. When the batteries start to run low the lock will offer a warning that they need changing. If the warning is missed the batteries can easily be changed. Every safe is sold with a manual with instructions of how to change the batteries. No codes in the lock will be reset or lost if power runs out.
Q10. What happens if I forget my code?
A10. If you lose or forget your code, it follows the same principle as if you were to lose a safe key. An engineer would be required to attend and either drill or pick open the lock to gain access.
Q11. Can I change the code on an electronic lock?
A11. All electronic lock codes can be changed by following the manufacturers’ instructions in the manual which is provided with the safe.
Q12. Can I purchase extra keys?
A12. Extra keys are best purchased when placing an order; this is both time and cost effective.
If you require extra keys for a safe you currently have please contact our customer services team who will be able to assist.
Q13. What happens if I lose my safe keys?
